Useful Tips to Help You Get the Most Out of Your Vinyl Fence

Fortunately, VEKA Inc vinyl fences installed by New Design Fencing require little to no maintenance in order to keep them looking and functioning at their very best. In this section, we will explain some of the best ways to clean and care for your vinyl fence. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call New Design Fencing in Medicine Hat.

How to Clean Your Vinyl Fence

While vinyl fences typically require very little maintenance, you may notice a buildup of dirt, mould or grime on it over time. This can take away from the nice, clean appearance it had when first installed. Vinyl fencing is easy to clean, and with proper maintenance, your vinyl fence should look beautiful and function as expected for decades.

The Garden Hose Approach

With your garden hose, work from the top down and use a soft-bristled brush if you find it necessary to loosen up the dirt. A mild cleaner, such as the multi-purpose cleaners from Mr. Clean®, Lysol® and Simple Green®, also works well when you hand wash your vinyl fence using a wet sponge. A combination of water and vinegar is also a natural alternative to store-bought cleaners. After you’ve wiped the surface firmly with the sponge, rinse off any cleaning solution with your garden hose. You can then wipe dry the surface using a clean cloth if you so desire.

Removing Heavy Dirt Build-Up

A pressure washer works very well at removing heavy dirt build-up. Generally, pressure washers are safe to use on most vinyl materials but should be operated with care to avoid permanent damage, which can occur if used in the wrong areas. To avoid damage, please consult the manufacturer’s use and safety instructions. Before you pressure wash any area of your vinyl fence, take steps to either secure or remove the post and picket caps and any accessories that may become detached or damaged in using the pressure washer.

Spray a soap solution on the vinyl fence, beginning at the bottom and working up toward the top with low pressure. Working in small areas will ensure that the soap will not dry on the vinyl fence before you are able to rinse. Apply the solution evenly and let it sit for a few minutes.

Begin rinsing at the top and work your way down with higher pressure. You may need to scrub stubborn areas with a soft-bristled scrub brush prior to rinsing. Always begin rinsing at a safe distance from the vinyl to ensure no damage is done. As you begin rinsing, move closer to the vinyl fence until you can effectively clean and rinse it without damage. Too much concentrated pressure can permanently damage the vinyl fence. Thoroughly rinse the vinyl fence removing any soap residue. Wipe with a dry cloth if desired.

Cleaning your vinyl fence at least once a year can help prevent dirt build-up and keep it looking like new.

Cleaning Solutions We Recommend

For harder-to-remove dirt or stains, such as topsoil, motor oil and other contaminants, there are several effective household cleaners available, including:

  • Lacquer thinner - no. 1 cleaning solution

  • Simple Green® All-Purpose Cleaner

  • Mr. Clean® Multi-Purpose Cleaner

  • Lysol® Multi-Surface All-Purpose Cleaner

  • Windex® Multi-Surface Cleaner

  • Vinegar and Water

In some cases, you may wish to use a mildly abrasive cleaner or a paste-like scrubbing solution. The use of overly abrasive materials can have a negative effect on the surface of the vinyl fence. Do not use cleaners containing aggressive organic solvents because they could affect the surface appearance of the vinyl. Examples of such cleaners are: chlorine bleach, liquid grease remover, strong soaps, detergents containing organic solvents, nail polish remover, as well as furniture polish and cleaners.

Before you use any type of product advertised as a PVC revitalizer, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Failure to do so may result in irreversible damage to your vinyl fence.
